Menstrual cramps are caused by contractions in the uterus by a chemical called prostaglandin. During menstruation, the uterus contracts more strongly.
According to Ayurveda, Aartav or Menstruation is controlled and governed by Apana Vayu (Sub type of Vata Dosha). Vata is a factor which moves all other factors of the body in its desirable directions. Apana-Vayu is situated in the pelvic floor and its energy pervades the lower abdomen. The flow of Apana-Vayu is downward and outward.
Due to movement of Apana Vayu in opposite direction or disturbance, obstruction in the flow of vayu may cause severe pain during menstruation called Kashtartav (Dysmenorrhea).
The first important thing is to control the Vata. Oil therapy including massage is used to relieve any obstructions in the passage, relieve any spasms, facilitate free movement of vata in the proper direction, and enhance a proper menstrual flow.
Anuvasan Basti(Oil Enema) is beneficial in menstrual pain by normalizing the flow and direction of Apana Vayu (Vata). A Series of Oil and decoction enema are administered to patients, post which patients have experienced a significant reduction in pain and discomfort. Therapy including massage is used to relieve any obstructions in the passage, relieves spasms, facilitate free movement of vata in the proper direction, and enhance a proper menstrual flow.
Uttar basti: Uttar basti is a procedure where medicines are administered inside the uterus. This helps in removal of blockages of channels (which provides nutrition to the uterus) also it helps to give more nutrition (poshan) to the garbhashay (uterus). Ayurveda has gained importance in treating irregular menses, with the concepts of yoga and organic medicines.
Ayurveda recommends women to take a healthy diet that is rich in nutrients and is regular of course. The menstrual cycle gets affected If one doesn’t eat at regular intervals and at proper hours. During periods you must avoid meat, pickles, and sweets and stick to lighter meals for proper working of the digestive system and reduce further discomfort
The menstrual cycle of a woman is a window to her overall reproductive health. The regular menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, however, our bodies don’t always work like clockworks. We might experience delays or irregularities in our periods once in a while. Women must try taking rest, avoid night outs, avoid exercising, avoid late night eating etc.
One must try doing medication during the menstrual cycle as this helps in keeping the person physically and mentally healthy. This also provides a peace to the mind and body which prepares the women to cross the cycle without any issues or pain.
To keep the vata in balance a good oil massage is something you must keep in mind and apply. Try performing oil massage on regular intervals and maintain the balance of doshas in your body and thus it will result in proper menstruation.
Ashoka: It proved to be very effective in treating irregular periods. Ashoka when boiled and honey or jaggery added to it turns to become the queen of herbs for the female reproductive system.

Mulethi: When taken with rice wash water (chawal ka paani) regulates the menstrual cycle. It can also be beneficial if included in tea preparation with help of its roots and consumed.
