Migration is defined as acute beating pain or a pulsing sensation, commonly seen on a part of the head or both in some cases. A migraine patient generally deals with nausea, headache, vomiting and sensitivity towards sound and light. It can affect people of all ages and indicates signs of tension, distress and even a brain related problem.
In the classical texts of Ayurveda, migraine is termed as “Ardhavabhedhaka” and is mainly caused due to an imbalance in the tridoshas, namely vata, pitta and kapha doshas. This negatively influences the functioning of the nervous system, hampering memory, concentration and focus, in addition to diminishing eye health, irregular sleep cycles or insomnia and reduced productivity be it at work or at home.
* The most defining symptom of migraines, as described in ancient ayurvedic scriptures is “Ardheshirsha Vedana”, meaning pain in half the region of the head.
* Other indications consist of stabbing pain in the region of Manya (cervical region) Bhru (eyebrows), Karna (ears), Akshi (eyes) and Lalata (frontal head).
* Moreover, people suffering from this chronic disorder also experience high intensity of pain with Brahma (vertigo/dizziness), Shankhamoola Darana (tearing pain in temporal regions) and Chakshu-Virajyata (redness of eyes).
The actual cause of migraine is still not completely discovered but some studies say migraine likely starts when agitated nerve cells pass signals that activate the trigeminal nerve, which gives consciousness to your head and face. Some activities that affect and influence migraine are:
A hormonal change many times becomes a trigger point for migraine and gradually leads to the beginning of migraine pain.
It's seen in most of the cases when a person stresses over things for a long time at an increased rate it turns into migraine.
This is seen in most cases that a sudden change in the weather will affect the patient’s body and might turn into migraine pain
Sleep pattern also affects migraine. The person must follow a proper sleep schedule to keep the brain stable and relaxed.
Meal is an important factor in influencing migraine. A person dealing with migraine must maintain a proper diet or else he/she can get an attack of the migraine headache due to hunger.
Ayurvedic treatment is not for the disease itself, but it is tailored for the particular condition of disease of the individual. Panchakarma (purification) treatments are highly recommended for treating Migraine. This is done after a detailed ayurvedic consultation with the ayurvedic doctor. Treatment is tailored by the doctor which can consist of herbs, therapies and a diet/lifestyle program.
According to charak acharya vamana karma even sadyog vaman can be planned in migraine attacks, it shows significant effects in reducing frequency of migraine attacks because it leads to elimination of excessive pitta and kapha doshas from the body.
This therapy will help in eliminating excessive pitta dosha (acidity) from the body which is the main cause for migraine.
According to charak and Susrut acharya niruha and anuvasana basti, Ksheera Basti, are indicated to control vata dosha in the body.
Nasya is a part of panchakarma therapy applied to migraine patients. Here medicated oil is passed into the nose of the patient to reach the throat. It cures disorders of migraine, nose as well as throat.
Dhoomapana is the practice of inhaling the medicated smoke of herbs and Kavala Graha means oil pulling.
Shirodhara is a technique used to treat migraine through Ayurveda. Shirodhara involves oil massage of the forehead and gradually increases the rates of curing the problem. In this treatment the herbal medicated oils are applied on the forehead of the patient, which results in eradicating the causes of migraine and treating the tissues.
As the name suggests in this procedure various herbs are mixed together to form a paste which is applied on the patient’s scalp which is then covered with help of leaves which are beneficial to the scalp and provides some amount of nourishment to the scalp.
This cures metal irritation and stress. It also improves the skin glow of the patient. In this procedure herbal milk is poured over the patient’s head and body. This works as a moisturizer to the body and improves the mental as well as other health conditions of the patient.
* Avoid the food stuff that triggers the disease.
* Avoid smoking and alcohol completely.
* Avoid dried food, fast food and junk food.
* Take warm food rich in clarified butter.
* Do regular meditation and pranayama.
* Regularize your bowels. Avoid constipation.
* Take proper sleep.
Food is a very important element to overcome the migraine issue and thus intake of a diet which controls kapha and pitta dosha are recommended. Humans around 18–65 years of age have dealt with headaches every year and, of those humans, 30% or more have found dealing with migraines. Migraine is not something which should be ignored, a proper treatment is very important to make its effect go down and keep it under control and ayurveda has proved to be the only remedy of migraine which purifies the whole body of a patient.
