Shirodhara
Shirodhara, the practice used in Panchakarma, is derived from the two words “shiro” (head) and “dhara” (flow). A practice in panchakarma which is done with the help of oil, milk, buttermilk, or water, all or any of these elements are poured on the forehead of the person. The practice is done to rebalance the doshas and other accumulated benefits.
The wondrous universe of Ayurveda is full of therapeutic marvels that helps you revive, rejuvenate and help you live a more wholesome life, and we at Dr Jyoti Ayurveda strongly believe that we should adopt these practices into our daily life on a continuous basis, and not wait to fall sick to do so! Prevention is always better than cure, and helps you get the most out of life.
One key Ayurvedic therapy that is much in demand by our patrons at Dr Jyoti Ayurveda is ’Shirodhara’, an ancient treatment that is extremely beneficial for your body, that is both a preventative and curative wonder!
Shirodhara stimulates the Ajna Marma, which is one of the most important vital points of the body, or ‘maha-marma’ on the head. It is a key junction not only for nerves and tissues, but also for the circulation of vital life force, or ‘prana’ . The Ajna Marma is also called the ‘Third-Eye’ Chakra, which is the sixth primary chakra in your body, and is often known as the center of intuition and foresight. According to Ayurveda, stimulating the Ajna marma leads to an expansion of awareness, a state of parasympathetic repose, an egoless state, during which we connect deeply with our own selves and subconscious. It is a process in which the innate intelligence of our body is revealed. With your eyes covered, you enter a state of blissful relaxation akin to meditation.
How Does Shirodhara Work?
The muscle of the head feels a soothing and calming sensation due to the infusion of oils or other liquids. The activity of the pituitary gland is regulated on soothing the hypothalamus. The blood circulation is improved by shirodhara which also stimulates the various vital points all around the head. Vasodilatation of all the blood vessels is caused due to the warm herbal oils used for this process and thus the blood circulation in the brain is improved. The elevated serotonin levels are brought down by the massage and hence our mood and happiness is brought back. The stress hormones like adrenaline and noradrenaline are reduced by shirodhara, leads to relaxing the mind and thereby helps in relieving stress and tension.
The condition of the patient and his vatic imbalance are the prime criterias for deciding the liquid for the shirodhara treatment. The ones which are commonly used are oils, coconut water, buttermilk, decoctions especially those containing licorice and milk processed with herbs and other herbal ingredients
Types of Shirodhara: There are various types of Shirodhara treatments, depending on the health condition of the receiver, as well as the treatment they are seeking. Dr Jyoti Ayurveda takes pride in offering all four types of Shirodhara to its patrons, which as as follows:
Kashaya dhara (Herbal Decoction): The Shirodhara that uses medicated herbal decoction is called Kashayadhara, where the type of oil and herbs are chosen depending upon the condition of the receiver that they would like the treatment for. Learn more bout
Thaila Dhara (Medicated oil): The Shirodhara that uses medicated oil in the process is called Thaila Dhara.
Ksheeradhara (milk infused with herbs): Ksheerdhara uses medicated milk in its shirodhara process, which is infused with the relevant herbs, like sandalwood, camphor or vetiver roots. The temperature of the milk is kept lukewarm at the beginning of the process, and then maintained as room temperature as it is carried forward.
Takra dhara (buttermilk infused with herbs): Takradhara is a type of shirodhara in which herb infused butter milk (or takra), made by mixing equal quantities of a herbal decoction and buttermilk, is poured from a specific height and for a specific time period continuously and rhythmically, allowing the takra to run through the scalp and into the hair. You can find out more about these individual types of shirodhara in our ‘Treatments’ section. Just simply look up the name of the treatment, and learn more!
The form of physical or emotional change that comes from any event or thought that makes one feel angry, frustrated, or nervous is the stress. The alleviation of stress is the prime property of shirodhara. The parasympathetic nervous system mode is turned on as the body enters into a deep relaxation state, the stress hormones are subdued since the hyper-alert brain waves (beta waves) transition into relaxed-alert ones (alpha waves). Energy is conserved by the body due to this transition which in return relaxes muscles, dilates blood vessels and slows down the heart rate.
This shirodhara therapy not only benefits the mind but also helps in reducing stress caused due to infertility and other pregnancy related issues. Stress plays the main role in causing infertility and it could be dealt with by shirodhara. As per ayurveda Somansya garbhadharna shreshtha means to get pregnant your mind must be relaxed and you must be happy which is achieved through Shirodhara.
This therapy works on opening the person’s third eye which is the home of intuition or awareness, which leads to the free flow of ‘prana’ or ‘life force’. The events are recalled which were buried deep in the past and see them from a vantage point which was previously inaccessible.
In today’s fast pace of life sleeplessness is common in quite a few individuals and the reason could be anything like deadlines at your workplace or some kind of stress in your life. Exhaustion and lethargy are some of the results caused due to sleeplessness and this could also disturb your physical and emotional being.
Do you know that shirodhara is the natural stress- booster. Brain toxins are cleared by this head massage which is accompanied by the herbal oils and thus the memory, concentration, etc are also improved. The regulation of serotonin hormone is done in return for the normalization of the vata and pitta doshas in the body. What Problems Are Cured By Shirodhara?
Shirodhara is a technique used to treat migraine through Ayurveda. Shirodhara involves oil massage of the forehead and gradually increases the rates of curing the problem. In this treatment the herbal medicated oils are applied on the forehead of the patient, which results in eradicating the causes of migraine and treating the tissues.
Vision problems are very well handled by this procedure. The eye muscles are improved by the massage, which also boosts clarity and helps a person see better without any glasses. Effective results are seen when the prescribed Shirodhara therapy using eyesight improving oils is done for a fortnight.
Different types of psychotic problems are treated with the help of Shirodhara therapy like depression, dementia, restlessness, etc. The brain chemicals are balanced with the help of the therapy with the help of the potent anti-stress, antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties of the herbal oils at use.
The medicated oils absorbed through the scalp stimulate the hair follicles, and hence Shirodhara is a vital therapy to treat hair problems such as Premature graying of hair or Hair fall.
